Using GPT-3 AI language model for creating fantasy RPG content for tabletop games like D&D.
GPT-3 is a machine-learning algorithm that produces text. Unlike many of its predecessors, GPT-3 has managed to create all-new text that is virtually indistinguishable from that which is written by a human author. Though still in relatively early stages (GPT-3 won’t be writing a full LitRPG novel any time soon), the algorithm has respected researchers in a number of fields interested in its potential applications and even in potential abuses.
How GPT-3 is Used in Gaming
One of the many potential applications of GPT-3 lies in the world of gaming. Though again still in its relative infancy, designers are already starting to see the potential of the tool when it comes to making new games. GPT-3 is on the verge of being able to revolutionize the field of tabletop gaming as well, with uses that are going to fill in a number of the holes that have long made it so difficult for human players to build convincing worlds and maintain ongoing stories.
Generating Dungeons and Maps
One of the simplest, yet ultimately most important, ways that GPT-3 is going to be able to change games like Dungeons and Dragons is with the process of building dungeons. Human players tend to put a lot of effort into designing dungeons, only to fall back on using tried-and-true tropes and repetitive elements. GPT-3, however, can continue to generate new content as long as necessary. Imagine, if you will, a D&D dungeon in which even the DM doesn’t know what’s going to be around the next corner – something that GPT-3 will be able to do for players will relative ease.
GPT-3 will also be able to flesh out game worlds in a way that tends to be too time-intensive for human DMs. If your party is always pushing the boundaries of the map, you know how difficult it is to fill in those blanks on the fly. GPT-3 can do this easily, though, helping you to build out a world even as your players are making choices. This is a real game-changer for most DMs and one that can help existing campaigns move into larger worlds after they’ve made it through the pre-determined challenges.
Bringing NPCs to Life
Another place where GPT-3 shines is in dialog. DMs all around the world know that coming up with dialog on the go is part of the process, but many can find themselves out of their depths when they attempt to come up with compelling backstories or conversation options for minor characters. If you’ve played with parties who question everyone, you know that coming up with unique personalities and backgrounds can be tough. Offloading this process on to the machine learning algorithm frees up more time for DMs to focus on their main characters and ultimately to craft better games while the algorithm focuses on the day-to-day elements.
Creating New Adventures
The holy grail of game designers using these machine algorithms is creating a game that can essentially end up creating itself. This is more than just relying on GPT-3 for a single dungeon or for a bit of dialog – it’s a process of leveraging the tool to make an entire dungeon-crawling game. It’s actually something that’s much closer to reality than many might expect, with a few games on the market already leveraging the technology in unique ways. We may in fact be far closer to the day where tools like GPT-3 are actually authoring games with minimal human input.
Dungeon AI and LitRPG Adventures: Bringing Text Games Back to Life
One of the coolest places to see GPT-3 at work is with LitRPG Adventures. The site is already getting a lot of attention because of its lofty goals, but some of the groundwork for how it is going to be played is already being laid. There have already been demonstrations of GPT-3 being used to create D&D characters for the games – not only with things like basic stats, but with full backstories. Maps have already been generated as well, with other features like NPCs with full conversation options coming along especially well. It’s a game that very much looks like it’s going to fulfill the promises of GPT-3 in the gaming world.
While LitRPG Adventures is clearly going to be a fairly unique game, it does owe a lot to the GPT-3 powered version of AI Dungeon. AI Dungeon is an AI-powered game that leverages GPT-3 to do much of what was talked about earlier, bringing dungeons, quests, and even simple NPCs to life. The game’s actually advanced enough that it can generate in-game books on the fly, yet even it is still in its relatively infancy. Games like AI Dungeon and LitRPG Adventures really feel like they’re going to bring text adventures back to life for a whole new generation of players.
Though GPT-3 is still a relatively new tool, it’s one that is going to have a huge impact on games going forward. It will not only change development but it will also wildly change the scope of what’s able to be done by designers. Those who are able to see the games being made with the tool now will certainly be getting a brief peek into the future but the truth is that the most exciting developments with this tool are still yet to come.
