Building a D&D Halfling Backstory Generator with GPT-3

I’ve been playing around with using AI to generate player character backstories starting with GPT-2 back in 2019. Since that time, I’ve gotten access to GPT-3 from OpenAI and have been quietly building a set of tools (and a community) for tabletop gamers. Here’s a quick look at the D&D halfling generator that you can use today!

As you can see, you can choose the basics things like your character class. However, that’s not all. Oh no! My advanced GPT-3 powered halfling generator has other options to help guide the AI in the right direction!

D&D Halfling Backstory Examples

As promised, here’s a few examples of the output from my D&D halfling backstory generator.

Backstory:

Ermis was born in the Kingdom of Grabisco, where he lived a rather uneventful life for the most part. He fell in love with the outdoors, and trained to become a hunter. He learned everything he could from the local rangers, and even took the opportunity to travel across the kingdom. He made many friends and found a sense of belonging he had never known. He wants to share this sense of belonging with others, and he wants to protect the wilderness from those who would harm it.

Personality:

Ermis is a kind and caring soul. He is always looking out for the best interests of others, and he’s a bit of a pushover when it comes to taking orders. When he has a goal in mind, he will often stop at nothing to achieve it.

Appearance:

Ermis has a well-kept beard that he tamed with various oils and balms. He wears a long brown cloak with a grey tunic underneath. He has a small bag of various trinkets, including magical items he has found during his travels.

Start of Character:

Ermis has been traveling throughout Grabisco, looking for the perfect place to settle down. He wants to enjoy the outdoors and make new friends while protecting the wilderness from those who would do it harm.

Backstory:

Ri’lek’s parents were killed in the War of the Four Kingdoms. She and her brother were separated and she was forced to fend for herself. She was a natural at surviving in the wild and became an accomplished hunter. She was eventually captured and enslaved by the Grabisco Kingdom. She was trained as a thief and taught to steal from her fellow slaves.

She always felt bad about stealing from her fellow slaves and tried to be as generous as possible when she could. She was eventually freed from slavery by a halfling freedom fighter and joined the resistance movement.

Personality:

Ri’lek is very loyal and protective of her fellow halflings. She has a temper and is easily offended. She is not very good at reading people and can be tricked into giving up information.

Appearance:

Ri’lek has short brown hair and brown eyes. She wears light leather armor, but always carries a long sword with her at all times.

Start of Character:

She has decided to travel around the Grabisco Kingdom and help the halflings fight for their freedom.

Backstory:

Paisley grew up on the cold, northern frontier of Grabisco, where her parents were lumberjacks. She was an inquisitive girl, always asking questions about the world around her. Her parents, who were quite content with their simple lives, were surprised by this, but quickly warmed up to the idea. They taught her to survive in the harsh climate, but also encouraged her to explore. When Paisley was old enough, she left home to travel the world, learning everything she could, and recording her findings in a journal.

Personality:

Paisley is a free spirit. She’s always open to new ideas and experiences, never afraid to try something new. She’s not afraid to speak her mind, even when it might upset someone. She is loyal to her friends, but never afraid to question a bad decision.

Appearance:

Paisley has long, curly red hair and freckles across her face. She dresses in warm, earthy colors, and wears her hair in a long, single braid. She carries a bow and an axe when she goes out adventuring.

Start of Character:

Having heard rumors of the strange happenings in the kingdom of Grabisco, she has decided to journey there in search of adventure.

Backstory:

Soothsayer grew up in the jungle near the Grabisco Kingdom. His parents were killed when he was young, and he was raised by the jungle elves. They taught him how to fight and survive in the wilderness. He developed a love of nature and animals and decided to leave his tribe to see the world.

He has traveled through the Grabisco Kingdom and beyond, learning how to read the signs of nature and how to deal with the many creatures he encounters. He has learned how to read people as well, using his powers to his advantage. He hopes to make a name for himself as a great adventurer and to learn all that there is to know about the world.

Personality:

Soothsayer is friendly and outgoing. He enjoys telling stories and making people laugh. He is fond of animals and often carries a small monkey on his shoulder. He is fascinated by the world and what it has to offer, and he is extremely curious about the future.

Appearance:

Soothsayer has long brown hair and a short beard. He is tall and built strong. He wears light brown robes, and he carries a staff that he uses to fight. He is never seen without his small monkey, who he dresses in a red cape and often carries around in a pouch.

Start of Character:

Soothsayer has decided to travel through the Grabisco Kingdom, seeing what it has to offer. He hopes to meet all sorts of interesting people and creatures, and he wants to find a place where he can settle down. He’s open to settling down anywhere, though he thinks the Jungle Elves are cool and would like to settle down with them again if he can.
