Paul Bellow here, coming to you with some exciting updates from the LitRPG Adventures workshop! I’ve been up burning the midnight oil, tinkering away at our new backstory generator. Although it’s not ready for its grand debut just yet, the new developments are too thrilling not to share.
I’m in the process of creating a little magic box — a text input that will allow you, dear adventurers, to add a sprinkle of your own creativity, about five or ten words. We’re keeping it tight with a word limit, ensuring that every addition is a focused burst of imagination.
The most electrifying change? I’ve integrated GPT-4 into our system. Yes, you read that right — GPT-4! This upgrade does come at a cost, but from the results I’ve witnessed, it’s worth every penny. The quality and output for backstories are on a whole new level.
Here’s where it gets even more interesting: I’m crafting the tool to conjure up a character avatar alongside the backstory it generates. Imagine watching your character’s narrative and appearance come to life simultaneously — it’s quite the spectacle.
During a test run with GPT-3.5 Turbo, I’ve noticed the avatars need a bit of polish (especially removing unwanted text from the image). But when I flipped the switch to GPT-4 Turbo, the quality noticeably improved. There’s a clear distinction in the writing style — it’s closer to the selected writer’s voice, and the content feels more aligned with what you’d expect from a high-fidelity model.
As I continue to refine this tool, I’m keeping the current Advanced character backstory generators available. This new addition is simply another avenue for you to explore, offering more control over the AI model you use and the bonus of generating an avatar.
I’ve observed that GPT-4 follows the writer’s style with remarkable adherence, and the avatars, while still in need of tweaking, are coming out more accurate and visually engaging. It’s not just about adding more paragraphs; it’s about capturing the essence of your character in both text and image.

I’m on the cusp of launching this on the site after a few more tweaks and tests. We’re making sure the system is robust, preventing any misuse of that magic text box (we don’t want any f-bombs or the like sneaking in!).
With a bit of luck and a dash of elbow grease, this new tool might go live by tonight, or by the weekend at the latest. And when it does, you’ll have access to it along with over three dozen other Advanced RPG tools we’ve built with OpenAI’s products.

And I’m not just stopping there. I plan to weave this text-image synthesis feature into other tools — imagine Overland maps, cities, monsters, and more, all given life with AI’s help.
