Okay, okay, one of the games on this list might not shock you – literally or figuratively – but I hope I got your attention. As a long time RPG enthusiast (PC-centric), I’m excited about all the great free RPG games for the PC in 2022. Hopefully, you’ll find one or two on this list that become your new favorite. Let’s get started!
6 Free Action RPG for PC
Here’s a quick look at six free action RPG you can play on your PC right now!
Lost Ark
Released back in 2019, Lost Ark is a top-down 2.5D fantasy massively multiplayer online action role-playing game. It is co-developed by Tripod Studio. This game originated in South Korea, but it’s played around the world. While not for everyone, this vast and vibrant world has many fans. It has its pros and cons (as you can see in the video below), but it was good enough to make our list, so check it out if it strikes you as interesting.
Genshin Impact
Released for the PC in 2020, this is an online RPG that has a decent sized player base. The game is heavily stylized with an eastern flavor, but this isn’t a bad thing! Far from it. If you enjoy anime or anything from the Far East, you’re going to want to give this game a shot for at least an hour or two. It’s free to play, but make sure you’re not tempted to dump a lot of money into this or any of the other games on our list. Free! Remember!
Dauntless
Dauntless is a free-to-play co-op action RPG that came out back in 2018. Well, the beta came out back then. Since that time, the game has undergone some changes, but it’s still got a following. This might be because of the solid gameplay. It was developed by Phoenix Labs and published and distributed by Epic Games – a great combo if you ask me! Check this out if you’re looking for exploring, crafting, and a solid sense of progression.
DC Universe Online
DC Universe Online is a free-to-play action combat massively multiplayer online game set in the fictional universe of DC Comics. With an initial release date way back in 2011, this game has been around the block a few times. The fact that it’s still around and has a player base at all is a testament to the fans of DC Comics (yes, they do exist!) and the developers of the game – Daybreak Game Company. Overall, if you’re into supers, check out this game.
Trove
Minecraft + World of Warcraft? Kinda! Trove is a free to play online RPG that combines the voxels of Minecraft with the characters, quests, items, and adventures of World of Warcraft. Developed and published by Trion Worlds, it came out back in 2015. Since that time, it’s grown a sizeable following from all sorts of gamers. If you love voxels and are looking for a new RPG experience, give Trove a try today. You just might enjoy yourself!

Swords of Legends Online
Swords of Legends Online is a relatively new action MMORPG set in a fantasy world with a unique storyline based on Chinese mythology and history. Yes, another game with eastern flavor. That is NOT a bad thing in my eyes. Released in 2021, this is one of the younger games on our list, but it’s already managed to build a reputation for being a good game. If you want something with a lot of story and character, give Swords of Legends Online a try today.

6 Free MMORPG for PC
Looking for a more traditional MMORPG experience? Check out these six great RPG games for the PC.
Albion Online
Albion Online is the first truly cross-platform MMO experience. It has a medieval theme and players from around the world. What’s known as a sandbox MMORPG, it’s a place to have fun with your friends. Albion Online’s recent expansion “Lands Awakened” is here and brings with it some epic features, so you might want to give this one a revisit if you’ve never played. Or check it out for the first time. Either way, I think you’re going to dig it.
ArcheAge
This is a fantasy sandbox MMORPG developed by Korean developer Jake Song and his development company, XL Games. It’s been around since 2013, and it still manages to cling to life. With so many other free to play MMORPGs these days, that must mean there’s something special about ArcheAge. And, indeed, there is something special about this game. To find out, I encourage you to try the game out for yourself. Your long-awaited adventure begins … now!

Rift
Developed by Trion Worlds and released way back in 2011, this is one of the older games on our list. The fact it’s still around and has players means the team is doing something right. They have a really cool class system that allows you to play any type of character you want, really. That means the game can be played with different builds to have fun in different ways depending on your mood. As long as you stay on the free side and don’t whip out your credit card, this can be a fun way to pass a few hours – or days.
Neverwinter
A Free-to-Play MMO based on the D&D roleplaying game and packed with epic tales and adventure that originally came out back in 2013, Neverwinter has been around a while. The hand-holding in this game isn’t for everyone, but it’s a nice starter MMORPG. Be warned that it’s D&D in name only. None of the rules of the tabletop game really translate well to an MMORPG, so while you’ll have similarly named spells, don’t expect this to stick to the books! Still, it’s a great intro-MMORPG.
Star Trek Online
Developed by Cryptic Studios, this originally came out back in 2010. Yes, they had an MMORPG market back then! In all seriousness, this is a sci-fi MMORPG centered around – you guessed it! – Star Trek. The game is set in the 25th century, 30 years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis and has grown a lot over the years. It’s not for everyone, but if you like Star Trek and play RPG on the PC, you should at least try this game out once. Beam you up?
League of Angels
Released in 2021, this is another “new school” MMORPG that doesn’t stray too far from the genre’s roots. While it has pay elements (they have to make their money somehow), as long as you can resist the urge to whip out your credit card, you can still enjoy a few hours of the game here and there when you need something new and different. Just be sure to remember that it’s only a game and there’s a LOT of other free RPG games for the PC you can play.
One PC RPG to SHOCK You!
Okay, maybe I do have an RPG that will shock you. It’s unfinished and it’s not free, but it’s a somewhat novel premise. You play a gamer who gets trapped inside an RPG. Yes, it’s been done before, but a couple years ago, I decided to take a few months to learn how to make a game. The result is LitRPG Reads: Enter the Game. It hasn’t made it to Steam (yet), but you can grab a copy relatively cheap over at itch.io.
Ever wonder what it would be like to be trapped in an RPG? Now you can find out!
Make life as a Gamemaster easier.... If you play Dungeon & Dragons, Pathfinder, or other fantasy tabletop role-playing games, this RPG random tables book is full of encounters, NPCs, and more. Available as an eBook or in a classic print format. Either way, you'll have a wealth of adventure ideas at your fingertips.
This LitRPG-themed ARPG has you playing a mild-mannered gamer who finds himself trapped in a game! Can you survive and find your way out?
On your meta adventure, you can collect dice to modify your equipment, craft weapons, mix potions, find LitRPG books, and a whole lot more.
You ARE the chosen one, and you WILL escape this game.
The dragon can’t beat you forever. Right?
