The Return of Spelljammer to D&D in 2022?

Are the rumors of new Spelljammer content true? Word is that we’ll be getting something from Spelljammer and another classic D&D world in 2022.

Hot off the wires…

During last month’s D&D Celebration, D&D lead story designer Chris Perkins shared early concept art of an upcoming alternate cover created by Hydro74, the artist whose work appears on many of the alternate covers. The artwork shows the miniature giant space hamster Boo standing in front of a stylized beholder. Boo, of course, is best known for his appearance in the Baldur’s Gate stories and is a companion of the popular character Minsc. However, Boo also has ties to Spelljammer (giant space hamsters are a hallmark of the series) and his appearance on an alternate cover is sure to bring up speculation that we might be seeing more Spelljammer teases in the not too distant future.

From a few days back…

For those unaware, we just had the ”Future of D&D” livestream finish and it showed a few things coming soon to d&d. [SNIP] Boo is a type of creature that is known to exist throughout various worlds through the connection of Spelljammer (the multiverse concept). We’ve had spelljammer confirmed to exist in 5E through several adventures that feature broken down spelljammers and nautiloids (also BG3) and now we had the reveal of the legendary hamster himself so a spelljammer setting may in fact be coming to 5E in 2022.

We’ve talked about the fact Spelljammer is an RPG Legend here on the blog previously (see: RPG Legends: Spelljammer) The fact they’re potentially bringing back this varied setting is good news and would really open up the Dungeons & Dragons universe.

Not really related, but this makes me think about the lack of official D&D novels these days. I really wish there were more fiction novels coming out. There was the dust-up with royalties with a few authors of very old and cherished series/worlds (Dragonlance), but there’s room for more.

Yes, we do have new Drizzt and what-not, but I’d love to see dozens of new D&D novels publishing.

All that said, the fact that WotC is likely bringing back the Spelljammer setting officially, it will be interesting to see what else they come up with moving forward!
