Earlier this summer, I got access to the GPT-3 API from OpenAI. I’ve used it to continue my work on creating RPG content. Here’s my story.
Dungeons & Dragons has been a part of my life in one way or another for decades now. In my younger days, I would DM or player in someone else’s campaign. Back then, before the Internet, finding other players was difficult, so gamers tended to band together. Being a bit of weirdo myself, it was nice to find similar people, an inclusive group.
Fast forward decades, and I’m still interacting with Dungeons & Dragons. More than one reader has said my Tower of Gates LitRPG series has a heavy old school D&D feel to it. And now, I’m using the world’s most powerful language model to produce RPG content suitable for D&D tabletop campaigns. Enter LitRPG Adventures Workshop, my current fascination.
Earlier this year, I began my journey, using a fine-tuned GPT-2 model to create DnD character backstories – a lot of them.
As soon as I got access to GPT-3, I started creating even better output without fine-tuning.
I want to eventually fine-tune GPT-3 with content generated by LitRPG Adventures, but I need to reach a critical mass with that website, making enough to at least pay the fees for OpenAI’s GPT-3 API.
Running on a billion dollar super-computer in the cloud, it’s a massive undertaking that wouldn’t be achievable on my own. Thanks to OpenAI, a solitary LitRPG author such as myself is able to experiment and play with the world’s most powerful language model.
If you want to create your own DnD Character Backstory with GPT-3, head over to LitRPG Adventures. In addition to characters, you can create eleven other types of content, including creatures, magic items, locations, and more. I’ve put a lot of time into the website over the summer, and I’m happy to be able to finally let people use it.
Eventually, I hope to be able to finish my 2D text-based MMORPG powered by GPT-3 AI…
I’ve got some ideas that might make the game unique beyond the fact it’s powered by a state of the art language model…
LitRPG Adventures Workshop, the DnD character backstory I’ve created that’s powered by GPT-3 is now live. It’s an online tool that generates a detailed backstory for your fantasy RPG character.
I’ve been working on this tool for a while now. It started as a fun little side project but I ran into a few major issues along the way. I was using an out-of-date version of my own game engine, I was trying to create a generator that would be able to create a backstory for a character created in any role-playing game, and I also wanted to support several different fantasy settings.
After working with GPT-2 for many hours, I was impressed by the capabilities of GPT-3 when it came to creating unique and original RPG content, including DnD character backstories. I simply gave GPT-3 two examples of what I wanted, and it was able to quickly generate a character backstory for one of a possible 800+ combinations of race and class.
Want to play a Female Leprechaun Swashbuckler? Not a problem! Male Ogre Mage? We can do it! The LitRPG Adventures Workshop makes it super easy to quickly create an RPG character backstory using GPT-3.
In addition to the character backstories, you can also create a variety of other content for your tabletop RPG campaign. You can generate NPC’s, locations, items, magic items and more. I’m working on a few special features that are currently in the works, so be sure to check back often for updates.
