The Best Video Games Based on Tabletop RPGs

There are many video games based on tabletop RPGs since they are the basis for early and modern games. Either type is highly satisfying and demands more than the average gaming session. So, here are some of the best you should definitely try if you love both media.

Cyberpunk 2077

CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 is controversial, at least. Much like it’s a tabletop RPG. Set in a dystopian future with a low-life, high-tech visual style, you get to explore an 80’s sci-fi stylized Night City straight out of retro video games like Syndicate, Beneath a Steel Sky, and even Deus Ex. While the initial launch failed across the board, the game based on Mike Pondmith’s seminal Cyberpunk RPG has improved thanks to patches, updates, and an upcoming expansion pack.

Vampire: The Masquerade

The 2000 version of Vampire: The Masquerade is a classic in every way. It is a faithful version of the tabletop RPG with the same name that caused a lot of trouble. Since then, there has been some disagreement about ownership and rights, so you shouldn’t expect Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 to come out soon. The project has been put off indefinitely. Swansong and Blood Hunt are two examples of spin-offs you can play until it’s released.

Games Based on Tabletop RPGs Includes Elder Scrolls

The Elder Scrolls is the series of RPG games that have sold the most copies. Skyrim, just one game in the series, has sold more than 30 million copies on its own. Even though the games aren’t directly based on any tabletop RPG, they are heavily influenced by classics like Dungeons and Dragons. Without any kind of tabletop RPG, you probably would have never played an Elder Scrolls game. The Elder Scrolls Online is the game that is most like D&D.

Baldur’s Gate

Baldur’s Gate is a classic Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game set in a fantasy world. Like other games in the same genre, D&D has a big impact on the whole series. Baldur’s Gate is different from other RPGs because it is an open-world game. Most RPGs are linear. If you go straight through the main story, the game is actually pretty short. But there are a lot of places to check out, and the world is full of side quests to keep you busy long after the main quest is over.

Warhammer 40,000

Warhammer is the most popular miniature RPG game in the world. The first Warhammer video game, Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat, came out in 1995. Since then, there have been 60 games for Windows, Linux, mobile, and other platforms. Also, it was just announced that Henry Cavill, who plays Superman and is a big fan of the Warhammer series, will produce and star in a high-budget Amazon adaptation of the series that will come out in the next two years.

By using books about being trapped in video games, Mr. Kings thinks he’ll be able to reach these reluctant readers. He's helping out with LitRPG Reads because of his journalism experience and love of gaming, especially Dungeons & Dragons.
